Going Mobile: Considerations for Reaching an Audience on the Move

It’s no secret that we’re a society on the move.  Mobile devices, from smart phones to tablets to mobile computers, have dramatically changed the way we consume information, share experiences and make purchases over the past 5 years alone.

Some interesting facts, figures and projections:

  • Of the world’s 4 billion mobile phones in use, over 1 billion – about 27% — are smartphones.
  • Per StatCounter, mobile traffic worldwide went from 4% of all web traffic in 2010 to over 10% in 2012.
  • Given current growth rates, web access via laptops and smart mobile devices is projected to exceed that from desktop computers by as early as 2014.
  • Nearly 80% of smartphone users use them in conjunction with shopping
  • Over 70% of smartphone users that view an ad in online or traditional (TV, magazine, etc.) media subsequently do a mobile search for more information, but almost 80% of large online advertisers still do not have a mobile optimized site.
  • Mobile phones are now considered the Seventh of the Mass Media.  A huge range of paid media content is consumed on smart phones, including over $9 billion in music, $5 billion in video games and a diverse spectrum of other products and services, from smart apps to horoscopes.
  • A recent study conducted by the Online Publishers Association discovered that about 10% of all mobile Web users had made an online purchase as a result of a mobile ad.
  • Facebook reported more than 500 million active monthly mobile users as of April of 2012
  • Over half of Twitter’s 165 million users use Twitter Mobile.
  • Every day, more than 200 million YouTube views occur on mobile devices.
  • One half of all local searches are performed on mobile devices.
  • 86% of mobile internet users are using their devices as a Second Screen – i.e. while watching TV.

If you’re not convinced that your website needs to be mobile-friendly, we don’t know what to say.  If you’re a fan of DotNetNuke – as we are – you will find it noteworthy to discover that DotNetNuke version 6.1 was designed with the mobile web in mind and now DotNetNuke version 6.2 adds the focus of social.   The 6.1 release uses adaptive rendering techniques to simplify the delivery of mobile websites.  Find out more at DotNetNuke.com.
